Fashion is dead

About tightrope walkers and virus circulators

 

Unlike to the statues of the antiquity which were meant to conserve the image of a person for eternity, today’s fashion photographers are confronted with the converse fact: The fashion scene is absolutely fast moving and the photographers must consequently stay the pace. They are like virus circulators, their pictures circulate rapidly from one medium to another.

Several well-known photographers try to express this fast moving element in fashion photography on the one hand. On the other the artists also try to critically broach the issue of fashion in radically challenging the close relation of photography and fashion – a constant tightrope walk. Thus, they contribute in finding recondite answers to the following reflections: How much photography fashion can bear – and how much fashion photography can bear? How strongly taxed the distance between photography and the exposure of fashion can be? In newly reanimating fashion with each of their shootings, the photographers show successfully that fashion is far away from being lifeless!

Von Gratwanderern und Virusverbreitern

In der Antike dienten Statuen dazu, das Antlitz einer Person möglichst für die Ewigkeit zu bewahren – mit einer ganz gegenseitigen Situation sind heutige Modefotografen konfrontiert: Auch ihnen geht es darum, das Bildnis eines Menschen festzuhalten. Doch die Schnelllebigkeit der Modeszene lässt sie zu einer Art Virusverbreiter werden, da ihre Bilder wie ein Virus von Magazin zu Magazin wechseln.

In ca. 25-30 Fotos von namhaften Fotografen und Fotografinnen wie Joachim Baldauf, Luis Sanchis, Christina Kruse, Jork Weisman, Henrique Gendre, Wiebke Bosse, Stefan Armbruster u.a. – repräsentiert von der Agentur Shotview (Wien/Berlin) – wird einerseits diese Schnelllebigkeit in der Modefotografie thematisiert; andererseits beschäftigen sich die Künstler auch kritisch mit dem Sujet Mode, indem sie sie mit ihren Bildern radikal hinterfragen und so die Beziehung zwischen Fotografie und Mode ergründen – eine ständige Gratwanderung. Mit diesem Ansatz stellen die ausgewählten Bilder folgende Fragen in den Raum: Wieviel Fotografie verträgt die Mode? Wieviel Mode verträgt die Fotografie? Die FotografInnen antworten darauf, indem sie die Mode mit ihren sprichwörtlichen „Shootings“ gleichzeitig auch neu beleben – ganz nach dem Motto: Die Mode ist tot, es lebe die Mode!
